Madurai: Over 300 noonmeal workers continued with their protest by staging a road block in front of the district collector’s office demanding a pay hike in Madurai on Monday.
Tamil Nadu Nutrition Meal Employees Association, district secretary A Solaiyan said that they were staging protests for better pay for the noonmeal workers. “Our main demands are that the retirement benefits for the noonmeal organisers to be increased to Rs 5 lakhs and that for the cooks it be enhanced to Rs 3 lakhs,” he said.
Due to a shortage in work force, the organizers sometimes have to work at more than five centres at such meagre pays, he added.
“We want to be treated at par with government employees and given benefits accordingly,’’ he said.
Solaiyan also said that they would not hold a road blocks on Oct 30, as it was Thevar Jayanthi and will only do the sit in protest, but they will continue as usual from Wednesday onwards, he said.
